Day to day itinerary
Day 1: Arrival Maputo
Welcome to Mother Africa. Arrival on Maputo Int. Airport where the driver will meet you and transfer to your hotel where you can relax after a long journey.
Together we will have dinner that evening in a nice local restaurant. Accommodation: Comfortable 3 star guesthouse including breakfast.
Day 2: Maputo city walk & cultural tour
A relaxed start to the day. After breakfast, we set off to explore Mafalala. This colorful neighborhood is the oldest township in Maputo and was created in the colonial era as a township for Mozambican workers who were not allowed to live in the center of the city. It was the historical home of many of Mozambique’s important cultural and political figures, the resistance movement that fought for independence.
After the tour we visit the famous fishmarket of Maputo – where you our fresh fish will be cooked on the spot!
Day 3: Maputo - Xai Xai
After breakfast we’ll we start our adventure northwards! We depart in our comfortable
tour bus to the N1, the only road connecting southern Mozambique with the north. After about 4.5 hours, we reach Humbi Farm, an exciting new project where your stay directly funds the two major social projects that are run here. Delicious local organic food will await. A unique accommodation! Here we will stay 2 nights. Dinner included.
Day 4: Humbi Farm
A relaxing day, where you can explore the beautiful beach of the Indian Ocean and go for a stroll in the permaculture garden. A fun cooking workshop where we learn more about the local Mozambican cuisine is part of our stay! In the evening we’ll have dinner together at Humbi Farm (included in the price).
Day 5: Xai Xai to Tofo Beach
Time to say goodbye to this special place. After breakfast, we continue our journey north towards Tofo Beach. In the city of Inhambane, our guide will be waiting for us for an interesting city walk where you will learn more about the history of Portuguese colonialism. We’ll enjoy a delicious local lunch before we continue our journey to Tofo Beach (about 45 minutes). Arrival at our beach hotel in the afternoon. You will stay here for 2 nights. Dinners are not included here as Tofo has many good restaurants, all within walking distance of your accommodation.
Day 6: Tofo Beach
The charming little town of Tofo is situated directly on a pristine beach and thé place to book a 2 hour Ocean Safari to spot the famous and friendly whale sharks in Mozambique.
Tofo Beach is also the perfect spot to book or try diving or just hang out in one of the chilled beach bars, drink coconut water and try the good food here.
At the end of the afternoon we’ll be picked up for a cultural evening in one of the local communities outside Tofo Beach. This lovely local project is entirely run by the local community. Dinner included.
After breakfast departure for Vilanculos (approx. 5 hours). Via Inhambane – where we make a short stop at the local market with the most beautiful and colorful handmade baskets – we continue our journey further north, to Vilanculos. If you are adventurous enough you can take the local ferry across the bay, where the bus will pick us up on the other side, in Maxixe. From here it’s another 3 hours to Vilanclos, where we will arrive in the afternoon in the beautiful Bahia Mar Boutique Hotel – directly facing the idyllic Bazaruto Archipelago. In the evening we’ll eat together in a lovely local restaurant with great food!
Vilanculos, homebase of Unique Mozambique with a relaxed vibe, is best known as the gateway to the idyllic Bazaruto Archipelago. With it’s authentic feeling – it’s a lovely place to relax, enjoy the stunning views and experience local Mozambican life. Pamper yourself today with one of the massages in the wonderful spa of the Bahia Mar Hotel, where all natural and local oils are used.
In the late afternoon we’ll be picked up for a fun tour to watch the sunset in the red dunes of Vilanculos. Dinner at the hotel or, if you prefer, at one of the local restaurants (not included).
Get ready for two truly unforgettable days in the paradise of the paradijselijke Bazaruto Archipel. After breakfast we’ll depart to the small harbour of Vilanculos, from where we will take a local dhow boat to Magaruque Island. Welcome to paradise. Here you’ll already get a taste of the fantastic snorkeling in this beautiful underwater world. Our fresh fish lunch will be traditionally prepared on the boat.
In the afternoon we set sail to our base camp. We will camp for one night under the stars in simple but comfortable safari tents. Our dinner will be cooked for us under the endless African sky.
After breakfast we set sail again and depart by dhow to the largest island in the archipelago: Bazaruto Island. Admire the majestic sand dunes that form an essential element in this unique ecosystem.
Even more beautiful than yesterday, this is the place to experience the stunning beauty of this group of islands, rising from the clear, turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.
The highlight today is snorkeling at Two Mile Reef. Be amazed by the diversity of the coral reefs and their colorful inhabitants. Swim alongside exotic fish, turtles, and maybe even manta rays and…. maybe we see the rare Dugong today!
After lunch, we make a short stop at the equally idyllic Benguerra island and sail back to Bahia Mar Hotel.
A day of relaxation before we begin our long final stage of our journey to the remote Gorongosa National Park. Relax by the pool or book another activity, for example horseback riding with Mozambique Horse Safari or a calming meditation session with Gerry.
This is the best place for it.
Day 12: Into the Wild, Vilanculos - Gorongosa National Park
An early start for a long day of traveling further north, to discover the deserted and dry interior of Mozambique, as well as its poor roads. After crossing the impressive Save River, we continue to Inchope, not too far from the border with Zimbabwe. The 42 km unpaved access road to Gorongosa
National Park will immediately make you realize you have truly arrived in one of the last wilderness areas in Africa.
Welcome to the wild.
Arrival in our base camp in Chitengo camp, in the later afternoon.
Dinner at the campfire (included).
Over the next few days, we will end our Mozambique trip with what is perhaps the highlight of this journey, described by National Geographic as ‘Africa’s Lost Eden‘.
Gorongosa is a magical place. Soak up the sounds, smells and colours of the bush, after our long travel day yesterday, we’ll take it easy today. After breakfast we visit the local community to get an idea of the wonderful projects and community work in Gorongosa National Park. We will visit the hospital and a school.
In the afternoon we’ll embark on our first afternoon/ sunset safari (3.5 hours)! All our safaris are in an open jeep with fully trained professional guides. Dinner at the campfire (included).
Today we’ll embark on another two unforgettable 3-3.5 hour safaris in open off-road vehicles. One in the early morning and one in the afternoon, when heat has passed and the conditions are optimal. With a little luck, we will spot lots of wild animals. Dinner at the campfire (included).
Gorongosa National Park is located in the heart of Central Mozambique. It covers approximately 3,770 square kilometers and consists of typical bushland, river valleys,
plateaus, and mountains covered with tropical rainforest. Gorongosa is home to an amazing variety of animals and plants, some of which are endemic and found nowhere else in the world.
Twenty years of nature restoration have brought back all the original wildlife. Now, you will be able to experience the area in its original splendor. A unique achievement and a testament to the power of nature.
Up early for our last early morning safari where hopefully we’ll see more beautiful animals – after we wave goodbye to this impressive place. After breakfast, we leave by bus for the port city of Beira, back to the Indian Ocean, for our last night in Mozambique.
Beira, once Mozambique’s most important port city connecting Zimbabwe with the coast, is a relaxed city where we will make a fun Tuk Tuk tour in the afternoon. We’ll see the Grande Hotel – once the largest hotel in Africa with impressive art deco elements and an Olympic-sized swimming pool – now a dilapidated ruin and a refuge for the less fortunate in this world.
Day 16: Beira - Johannesburg
After breakfast, transfer to Beira International Airport for the flight to
Johannesburg (12:55 p.m. with Airlink), or a domestic flight back to Maputo.
