We got married ourselves in 2005, this year exactly 20 years ago. My friends were astonished when I told them Gerry had asked me to marry him. But I thought it was cool and we wanted to have a big party with all the trimmings and all our friends. Gerry<\/strong><\/a> was very romantic, buying an engagement ring and going on his knees and all, and I said \u201cyes\u201d right away. His old father Noel in Ireland<\/strong><\/a> had tears in his eyes when we told him. We decided to get married in the north of the Netherlands<\/strong><\/a> and put a lot of time into preparing and organising, and finding the right people we felt good about, for the ceremonies, places and parties.<\/p>\n

And what a party it was! Three days long, friends from all over the world, a wonderful warm weekend in the Indian summer weather of September. Americana folk music, Irish music, delicious food, lots of\u00a0 beer and whiskey, beautiful natural flowers, wonderful locations, and most of all, fantastic guests.<\/p>\n

After the last guests left, we left straight away for our honeymoon to<\/strong> Tanzania<\/strong><\/a>. After months of preparations, a\u00a0 hectic wedding week with all of our friends, little sleep and amazing parties, we were so tired, we couldn\u2019t speak for the 10 hours on the plane from Amsterdam to Dar es Salaam.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_heading title=”Honeymoon in tropical Africa” admin_label=”Heading” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” title_level=”h2″ title_font=”|–et_global_heading_font_weight|||||||” title_text_color=”#FF6B5A” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][\/et_pb_heading][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Waking up the following day in a tropical garden in southern Tanzania full of colorful butterflies and beautiful flowers<\/strong> was delightful. Everything had been so beautiful and emotional during the past week, that a feeling of great sadness suddenly overcame us. It had been SO wonderful to celebrate life like this with all our loved ones and we realized that this day would never come back. It was beautiful and sad at the same time. Like southern Tanzania, Mozambique has a tropical warm climate<\/strong><\/a>, with beautiful trees and plants, colorful butterflies, pristine white beaches, beautiful national parks, peace and stillness and space.<\/p>\n

When we had just moved to Vilanculos<\/strong><\/a>, I was asked to assist with organizing a wedding here (see photos below). Sussurro means whisper<\/em> or \u201ca very soft whisper<\/em>\u201d in Portuguese, and this sets the tone for the experience there. This very intimate small-scale boutique hotel opened its doors in 2022 and is not so far from Vilanculos, where we live. I always really wanted to visit it and last year it finally happened: the manager of the hotel invited us. Sussurro is only accessible at low tide, to get there you drive 35 kms (4×4) over an enormous stretch of beach on a headland, in itself a spectacular experience. It was like a fairytale, so magical and beautiful, that I had to blink my eyes. We were warmly welcomed and I immediately felt the wonderful atmosphere there. Sussurro<\/strong><\/a> is the dream and creative creation of owners Adam and his wife Sarah. It consists of 6 very spacious and beautifully designed bungalows built with local materials, each with indoor and outdoor showers and heavenly beds. The lodge is completely off-grid, grows its own vegetables, and Adam and Sarah make every effort to integrate as much as possible with local life with every detail – decor, food, style, experiences and staff.
