Safari in Mozambique
Why Mozambique offers the best and most unique safaris in Southern AfricaA truly unique safari adventure in Africa
Mozambique is best known for its spectacular coastline and idyllic islands, but did you know that Mozambique also has the Big Five and is an increasingly exciting safari destination?
There are, beyond many, 3 reasons why a safari in Mozambique is truly unique.
3 reasons why a safari in Mozambique is reálly different
1. You will meet very few other people on safari as Mozambique is still unknown, meaning in some places you have the wilderness almost to yourself. This is truly special.
2. Mozambique is a prime example of why conservation is about so much more than simply protecting wildlife. It is about restoring entire ecosystems, wildlife restoration, reducing poaching, and ensuring that local communities also benefit. ALL National Parks in Mozambique were left pretty much empty after the civil war. Now they have all bee restored in their former glory. To experience that as one of the first is pretty amazing.
3. Mozambique is one of the few places in Africa where you can combine safaris with OCEAN safaris, legendary beaches, superb diving and snorkelling and the warm Indian Ocean.
Combine your safari with the beautiful and warm Indian Ocean
There are wonderful possibilities for pairing a bush experience with time on the coast. From Gorongosa to Vilanculos and the Bazaruto Archipelago, you can combine unforgettable wildlife experiences with turquoise waters, pristine beaches and some of the Indian Ocean’s most exclusive island retreats.
Where to go on safari in Mozambique? Inspiration itineraries
There’s something very special about going on safari in a place that still feels like a secret. Mozambique’s national parks offer wild, uncrowded landscapes and the chance to experience a side of Africa far beyond the usual safari routes.
From the wildlife-rich plains of Gorongosa National Park to the wild and remote landscapes of Zinave National Park and the unique coastal wilderness of Maputo National Park, each offers a very different way to experience Africa.
I have visited all parks and areas myself, and several times. They are all very special and unique in their own way.

Each area has its own character, that helps to create an itinerary that suits your sense of adventure and/or budget— whether you’re looking for exceptional wildlife, remote wilderness, or the perfect combination of safari and beach.
Choose Gorongosa for extraordinary wildlife and one of Africa’s most inspiring conservation stories. Head to Zinave for a sense of true remoteness and silence. Maputo National Park is uniquely situated on the Indian Ocean, where elephants, wetlands and wild coastline come together. Obviously, combine a safari with Mozambique’s beautiful Indian Ocean beaches and islands.

Highlights Safari Mozambique
1. Unique Safaris in Gorongosa National Park
Remote, wild, varied, breathtakingly beautiful. Staying in and experiencing Gorongosa is an unforgettable experience in what's called Africa's greatest restoration projectt - is an unforgettable experience. Choose for the more affordable main camp or the exclusive safari lodges right in the middle of the park. Gorongosa is truly unique.
2. Visit Mount Gorongosa and the rainforest
Explore Gorongos's unique ecosystems and visit spectacular Mount Gorongosa with a view on the floodplains. Here you will visit the Gorongosa coffee project, an inspiring local community project and home of Mozambique's best coffee (I drink it at home!). Take a dip in the deep clear pools of the waterfalls and let yourself amaze by nature.
3. Experience true wilderness and remoteness in Zinave National Park
When I first visted Zinave National Park I had tears in my eyes (and this is not a 'sales' text!). Mozambique's first Big Five park was already established in 1973, but like all national parks in Mozambique, it was completely destroyed after the civil war. Years of restoring and hard work have brought back an incredible spectacular wilderness area full of wildlife. As this park is still very unknown and little visited, it's incredibly special and unique to go here on safari. You'll be part of a group of very priviliged people to experience this remote area and spectacular wilderness as one of the first guests.
4. Elephants & Whales: Safari by the Indian Ocean, Maputo National Park
Maputo National Park is truly unique, as it 's located on the Indian Ocean. Your chance to see the two biggest mammals in the world, elephants and whales, at the same day! It's a beautiful reserve with stunning landscapes. It's easy accessible location not too far from the capital Maputo, makes this a beautiful part of your trip to Mozambique.
