Wat kun je doen in Mozambique?
"Why should I go on holiday to Mozambique"? "What does it have to offer"? "What is unique about Mozambique"? These were the most frequently asked questions at the Fair for Adventure, Luxury & Cultural Tours in Amsterdam, in the beautiful Beurs van Berlage, an architectural work of art with a rich past, in which I took part for the first time this year.
De Vakantiebeurs voor Bijzondere Reizen waar ik dit jaar voor het eerst zelf stond, richt zich op de wat meer kleinschalige aanbieders van vakanties en bijzondere bestemmingen en wordt elk jaar in januari georganiseerd. Ik was nog maar net klaar met het aankleden van mijn tafel, versierd met Mozambikaanse capulanas (sarongs), het aansluiten van de monitor met een presentatie over deze mooie bestemming, en de bezoekers stroomden al binnen.
Waarom naar Mozambique?
"Because it is stunningly beautiful!", I answered enthusiastically to the most popular question of the day. Mozambique is stunning and off the beaten track - an undiscovered destination with few tourists, beautiful beaches, snorkelling and diving with stunning coral reefs and small-scale and very nice accommodations.
Big Five & Nationale Parken in Mozambique
Nog wat aarzelend bekeken mensen mijn presentatie op de monitor waar mooie beelden voorbij kwamen van de paradijselijke Bazaruto Archipel met de aanlokkelijke turquoise blauwe zee, en onze safari in Gorongosa Nationaal Park in 2024. Een groot contrast op deze regenachtige grijze koude zaterdag in januari.
It was busier at Marjon’s table next to me. Like me, she organises personal tailor-made trips to Africa - to Madagascar, destination somewhat better-known in the Netherlands than Mozambique. I visited it myself back in 2010 with Gerry. Back then we met no less than five tourists on the whole trip, a beautiful country with unique nature.
Persoonlijke Reizen & aanpak
Tussen alle grotere agenten en touroperators in met professioneel promotiemateriaal, mooie banners en gratis promotiegifts, was het vast geen toeval dat Marjon en ik naast elkaar stonden; kleinschalige eenmansbedrijfjes (eenvrouws bedrijfjes om precies te zijn) met een vergelijkbare visie, persoonlijke aanpak en passie voor het land.
Ik merkte dat onze beider aanpak wel aansprak en we kregen zelfs al vragen of Mozambique en Madagascar niet te combineren zijn. Geografisch gezien inderdaad niet zo ver van elkaar verwijderd, maar beide op zichzelf staande unieke bestemmingen en logistiek gezien nog wel een uitdaging om dit in één vakantie te combineren.
Lokale originele handgemaakte producten Mozambique
During the course of the morning, my helpers arrived - my mother and father in his Mozambican shirt, custom-made at the local market in Vilanculos when he visited us for two months; my sister and my niece in her Mozambican trousers; and my brother-in-law who had made a nice promotional banner for me.
A Family Affair
Vol enthousiasme vertelde mijn vader de bezoekers alles wat ze maar wilden horen over Mozambique, ja dat het heel veilig is, ja dat het makkelijk is om er te komen met KLM en Airlink, dat de mensen alleraardigst, lief en vriendelijk zijn en de vrouwen op de lokale markt allemaal met hem wilden trouwen.
Dat het heerlijk warm en tropisch is en nee niet te heet en vooral, heel ontspannen en relaxed!
Het werd drukker en drukker en ik praatte de longen uit mijn lijf over deze in Nederland nog onbekende bestemming en wat er zoal te zien en te doen is in The Netherlands.
Wat is uniek aan Mozambique?
Deze voormalige Portugese kolonie is een onontdekte parel in Afrika: Tropisch, warm en betoverend. Kleinschalige boetiekhotels liggen aan een kristalheldere, turquoise oceaan, terwijl exclusieve safari’s onvergetelijke avonturen beloven. Duiken en snorkelen zijn hier adembenemend, en zwemmen met walvishaaien een once-in-a-lifetime ervaring.
Hoewel Mozambique vaak wordt gecombineerd met een reis naar Zuid-Afrika als strandbestemming aan het eind, heeft het land meer dan genoeg te bieden voor een twee tot drieweekse vakantie. De hoofdstad Maputo, gelegen aan de Indische Oceaan en met zijn relaxte sfeer is alleen al leuk om een paar dagen te verblijven, de mooie kunst galeries, kleurige markten en historische gebouwen te bezoeken en alvast een voorproefje te nemen van de Mozambikaanse keuken met de beroemde ‘Per-Peri kip’ en natuurlijk de verse tijgergarnalen.
Unieke Safaris in Mozambique
Safari opportunities are abound in Mozambiue and are available in In Maputo Nationaal Park, Zinave Nationaal Park and the spectacularly unique and remote Gorongosa National Park.
Rijke geschiedenis en Cultuur op Ilha de Moçambique
Those interested in cultural history will be indulged on Ilha de Moçambique (Mozambique Island), a UNESCO-protected World Heritage Site where the past and present intertwine in its mysterious streets - one of my Mozambique highlights.
"Hoe kwam je zo in Mozambique terecht?"
Op zondag, de tweede dag van de beurs was het een stuk rustiger. Maar mijn presentatie over Mozambique werd goed bezocht. Het viel nog niet mee het unieke van Mozambique in 25 minuten samen te vatten, maar de paradijselijke plaatjes en beelden spraken tot de verbeelding en de reacties waren enthousiast. “Wat is het prachtig daar”! De schoonheid! "Wat heeft het ontzettend veel moois te bieden” en "Hoe kom je daar zo terecht?!" - waren de opmerkingen zoal. Een aantal mensen kwam terug naar mijn stand om nog meer te weten te komen. Missie geslaagd!
Onontdekt en authentieke bestemming
The fact that Mozambique is still relatively onontdekt and has no mass tourism – it is still in its infancy, with all the advantages and disadvantages that this brings - appealed to many people. It’s a special and unique destination, with the fair living up to its name.
If you like beautiful beaches, diving and snorkelling or fancy a lovely relaxing wellness retreat in tropisch Mozambique after, for example, a safari holiday in South Africa or Botswana, Mozambique is not an inferior destination to places such as Mauritius - often chosen by agents or tour operators. But Mauritius is more touristy, much busier and with many large resorts. Mozambique, on the other hand, has unspoiled beaches, almost just for yourself.
Kleinschalige groepsreis Mozambique
Several visitors asked me if I organise adventure travel tours to Mozambique for small groups. The idea that came to me when I was in Zimbabwe last year was confirmed. Something I will definitely look into this year - a small group trip starting in Vilanculos all the way to Gorongosa National Park is definitely a possibility. What an adventure that would be!
